VGCHARTZ methodology: Hardware estimates are based on a retail sample and trends in individual countries, which are then extrapolated to represent the wider region. This usually allows us to create numbers that end up within 10% of the actual total.
This data is regularly compared with official shipment figures published by console manufacturers and figures estimated by regional trackers with greater market coverage than ourselves. We then update our own estimates to match these figures. This can result in frequent changes often within a short period of time, but we believe it is important to prioritize accuracy over consistency.
Please note that our estimates are based on sales data (units sold to consumers). In almost all cases, the numbers released by console manufacturers are based on loading (sales) data, where once the device has left the factory and entered the supply chain for delivery, it is considered a sale. This is why there is always a difference between companies (sales) and Vgchartz (throughput), even after we make adjustments. The only exception to this is when a console has been discontinued and the remaining stock is finally sold out – at which point the numbers will match.
